Era no tempo em que os escritores ganhavam dinheiro

The editors of the Post agreed to the idea of a series, but suddenly there was a problem. Faulkner discovered that his plan would not work with just the three additional stories he had in mind. H e needed to provide a bridge; he had to use some of his material to get him from what he called "the War-Silver-Mule business"" to the Reconstruction. Then another problem developed. Graeme Lorimer, of the Post's editorial staff, would not offer as much for the series as Faulkner wanted. At this juncture the flirtation from Hollywood turned into a contract offer from Hawks: Universal Studios would hire him at $1,000 on a week-to-week basis. He may have been relieved to leave the stories for the time being, and he made plans to fly out.
